The most populous location within this county is Egg Harbor Township, which has just over 43,000 residents as of the 2010 Census. The county seat of Atlantic County is located in the Mays Landing area of Hamilton Township.

This county is located around 100 miles south of New York City and about 1 hour and 48 minutes away from the Newark International Airport. The Atlantic County has a rich history that dates back to earlier than the 17th century. In the latter part of this century, European settlers began to make this place their home. Many of the early settlers of the area were Quakers, who preferred to live along the waterways of this location.

John Somers purchased around 300 acres of land in 1695, which was located right on the northern shore of the Great Egg Harbor Bay. That same year, he started ferry services across the bay so that people could easily access Cape May County. In the 18th century, the Camden and Atlantic Railroad Company was formed to construct a railroad line from Camden over to the coast. These are some things that helped this country grow in those early days of settlement.

Atlantic County is primarily known for the popular tourist location of Atlantic City. Resorts, casinos, and various other entertainment became very popular in this city when gambling was legalized in 1976.
